I designed a book for ZINdoc. The book was about Burmese poets and poetry in a country that had suffered from years of dictatorship. It grew out of a documentary the filmmakers had made on the same subject, and in collaboration with Dutch photographer Dana Lixenberg.
I designed the color scheme of the book based on colors I felt from watching the film. I wanted the design to be modern with an Asian touch, and to reflect the simple beauty I saw in the film – that’s why I chose the exposed spine binding as a reference to Japanese binding.
An interactive installation of the project was exhibited at the Kunsthal during the 48th Poetry International Festival. I came up with the idea of a full-printed wall for the exhibit. To make the poets larger than life: to symbolically give them recognition that the Burmese dictatorship denied them.
